Seasonal, locally grown fruits abound in Tallahassee this time of year. You can’t drive far out of town without passing a roadside stand loaded with watermelon, cantaloupe, or peaches. Blueberry farms are ready for the picking if you don’t have a bush in your back yard. You can find a farmer’s market around town almost any day of the week. Take advantage of the lower prices and freshness of these great fruits while they are in season.

Blueberries

Blueberries are not only delicious, they are packed with nutrients. They have been reported to help improve memory, strengthen bones and battle aging. Their blue color comes from substances called anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants. Blueberries are good sources of vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese with just 84 Calories per cup. It is best to find a source that does not use pesticides.

Watermelon

Nothing is more refreshing on a hot day than a juicy slice of watermelon. Two cups contains only 96 calories and is a very good source of vitamin C. It is also a good source of beta carotene, vitamins B6 and B1, potassium and magnesium. Lycopene, found in tomatoes, is also abundant in watermelon. Lycopene is thought to have protective effects against certain cancers

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe, also know as muskmelon, is a favorite at breakfast bars for good reason. It is a good source of fiber, vitamin B6, niacin, folate and a very good source of vitamin C, vitamin A (as beta carotene) and potassium, with just 60 calories a cup. Eaten fresh, in cold soups or in a smoothie, it is a refreshing and delicious treat.

Peaches

The Georgia peach is a local favorite that is nutrient packed. It is a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A (as beta carotene), niacin and potassium with just 68 calories in 1 large peach. It is delicious fresh, in a smoothie or as a sorbet. If it is not organic, you should peal them to remove pesticide residues.

These locally-grown, nutrient-rich, fruits are readily available at in-season prices in and around Tallahassee. They are great sources of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and electrolytes that are protective against disease. Buy them now, while they are fresh and support your local farmers.
